Lions rip off deadly Stormers wing Edwill van der Merwe

The Lions have completed the signing of Stormers winger Edwill van der Merwe, who will move to Johannesburg when his contract ends in November.

Western Province Professional Rugby (WPPR) made a big offer for Van der Merwe in a bid to retain his services, but the 25-year-old opted to move to Johannesburg.

Van der Merwe will still be available for Western Province in the Currie Cup play-offs and the Stormers for the first four rounds of the United Rugby Championship.

Stormers head coach John Dobson says while it is disappointing to see a product of the Western Province Rugby system go, everyone wishes the player well.

We wanted to keep it

“Edwill grew up supporting DHL Western Province and the DHL Stormers and worked his way up through our age group so naturally we wanted to keep him here and as we’ve said before we did everything we could. to do it,” he said. .

“He’s had a lot of playing time this year and as a result he’s gotten to impressive form and he still has a big part to play for us until he leaves, so we’re looking forward to seeing some great tries and brand celebrations.

“We are also looking forward to announcing new signings who will strengthen our squad ahead of the United Rugby Championship.”

Van der Merwe stressed that he was grateful for the opportunities given to him over the years to represent the teams he grew up with.

“Playing for DHL Western Province and the DHL Stormers was a dream of mine from an early age and there have been so many people who have helped me develop as a player here which I will always be grateful for,” said he declared.
