British supply of Starstreak and Stormer to Ukraine

The UK Defense Secretary issued a statement to the House of Commons including details of Starstreak and Stormer procurement in Ukraine.

Oral statement in Parliament by Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace, 25 April 2022: [extract]

“Ukraine, Mr. President, is a source of inspiration for all of us. Their brave people have never stopped fighting for their land. They endured indiscriminate bombardment, war crimes and overwhelming military aggression. But they held firm, galvanized the international community and pushed back the Russian army in the North and the North-East.

“We anticipate that this next phase of the invasion will be an attempt by Russia to further occupy Donbass and to connect, via Mariupol, to Crimea. It is therefore urgent that we in the international community ensure that Ukraine receives the aid and the weapons that it so badly needs.

“As Defense Secretary, I ensured that at every stage of the process, UK support was matched to Russia’s planned actions. To date, we have supplied over 5,000 anti-tank missiles, 5 air defense systems with over 100 missiles, 1,360 anti-structure munitions and 4.5 tons of plastic explosives. And in response to President Putin’s indiscriminate aerial bombardment and escalation of forces, I announced on March 9 that the UK would supply high and low velocity Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles. I am now able to inform the House that these have been in theater for over 3 weeks and have been deployed and used by Ukrainian forces to defend themselves and their territory.

“During recess, my ministerial team, Mr President, hosted a delegation from the Ukrainian government at the Salisbury Plain training area to explore other equipment options. This was quickly followed by the Prime Minister announcing an additional 100 million pounds of high quality military equipment, 120 armored vehicles, supply of anti-ship missiles and high-tech ammunition for precision strikes.

“But as we can see from the Ukrainian demands, there is still a lot to do. That is why I can now announce to the Assembly that we will donate a small number of armored vehicles equipped with launchers for these anti-aircraft missiles. These Stormer vehicles will give Ukrainian forces enhanced short-range anti-aircraft capabilities, day and night.
